Fertility 101
Infertility is a medical condition that results when you, your partner or both of you have physical conditions that interfere with the reproductive process. Many people are surprised to learn approximately 6.1 million couples in the United States are infertile - that is one in eight couples. It may be helpful to know that you are not alone in this experience and in your quest for infertility solutions.
It is important to understand how the female and male reproductive systems function when assessing one's fertility.
It's common for people to think of infertility as a female problem. Many are surprised to learn that 30% of infertility cases result from difficulties with the male reproductive system, 30% from the female reproductive system, 30% from both and 10% undetermined. This misconception is usually a result of not understanding the fertilization process and the physiological factors that affect it.
Arming yourself with this basic but essential knowledge may help you and your partner understand what is happening as you are trying to conceive a child naturally, or as you are considering or currently undergoing infertility treatments.
The links above areas will provide you with the "basics" of fertility and help explain this complicated process. The three main things needed for reproduction are sperm, eggs and good plumbing (uterus & tubes).
